Line suggestions

A couple of weeks ago, I noticed my fly line was sinking well back into the running line. This is a 4wt. wf floating GPX Scientific Anglers line I bought about two years ago.  It seems a little premature for a $60 line to go bad this quickly, although I fish very nearly every weekend. How much use should one get from a line of this expense?

After examining the line closely, I see that it is covered in cracks for about a 10 ft. section, probably about 30' into the line.  Anyone ever experience this? Also, since I will need to replace this line, does anyone have any recommendations? Has anyone ever tried the clear lines available?

Re: Line suggestions

I had exactly the same problem with a 5 weight GPX line I bought in the summer of '05.  I sent it back 3 months ago and SA sent me a replacement for free albeit with a little note saying the line had been dirty.  I am meticulous with my equipment.  Every fly line that touches the water is cleaned when I am done fishing so that was not the problem.  I have not had any problems with replacement line though.

Contact them here and they will give you a return address.

I'm not impressed with the clear lines.  I bought one when they first came out.  Lots of memory and it didn't cast well.  I had a buddy that bought one for steelheading last season and had real issues with the memory in the cold water.  He also stepped on it wtih studs (bad for any line) and it fared worse than traditional lines when stepped on with studded wading boots.

Re: Line suggestions

Wow guys, sounds like a bad batch from SA.  As for me, I have never had a problem with Cortland lines as far as cracking/sinking etc.  Don't get me wrong, I don't promote them or anyone else, I think most of the companies make a fine product.  I actually use the 333 instead of the 444 not so much because of money, but I just like the way it casts.  I have noticed one thing about fisherman in general though, and Dan nailed it on the head.  Taking care of your equipment properly.  Rule number 1, sunlight and extreme temps damage everything over time.  Once winter comes along, I bring all lines and waders and especially pontoon bladders into the house and store them in a closet.  Sadly, my garage is not insulated so I have to do this and I know it makes my wife furious, but I have yet to replace any bladders or fly lines because of cold damage.  I usually keep it pretty organized and ready for assembly so if I get a chance, I am going.  Good luck getting the line replaced!

FLY LINE UPDATE

Well after a month of waiting, I received a replacement line from Scientific Anglers. Unfortunately, the line they sent me was their bottom of the line Air Cel wf-4-f. As some of you may know, the GPX line that I had returned to them is top of the line and is a half size heavier to load faster rods. I guess I should be happy because the GPX was heavily used but I really don't want to use this line. I'm considering sending this line back and asking them if they are familiar with their own line spec's. Maybe I'll just give it away. I'm done whining.

Re: Line suggestions

People normally expect better customer service than that. I can imagine why they might not have wanted to replace the line with similarly priced goods. One can almost hear themm chatting amongst themselves "line is a disposable good, does he expect this high tech line to last like old fashioned line did?"

A better way of handling might have been to offer to sell you a new spool of line for half price if they considered the damage to have resulted from wear and tear or from abuse.
