Trout Bum Diaries

Trout Bum Diaries Back in April, Ryan with the Angling Exploration Group (AEG) contacted me about a new video they had produced called The Trout Bum Diaries and wanted to know if I was interested in taking a look. Sure, why not I thought? Even though most of the fly fishing videos that I have seen are about as dry as day old toast.

So a couple months go by with no fishing video showing up in my mailbox and I notice a review or two of the video start to pop up on fly fishing sites. I’m careful not to read any of them because I don’t want my opinion to be swayed. It turns out that demand for the video was so high that they ran out.

When I finally got my copy I can tell that this is no ordinary fishing flick. The cover of the DVD has a picture of guys sleeping in the dirt on the side of the road.

The video chronicles the fishing exploits of 4 guys in patagonia hunting for big trout with a good amount of the time spent showing the fish. Now there’s a novel idea-show the fish. It is shot in a Ken Burns meets MTV style that works well with the narration and music video action montage and will redefine the “fly fishing video”. Look for copycats to start showing up.

The scenery, fish and line-ripping action keep you watching until the credits roll and make me wish that when I was 21, fresh off a mission, and without a single obligation in the world, I had gone to South America to fish for 6 months. If only I had a time machine…

They don’t spend much time telling you about the presentation of the fly or what fly they are using although at one point they do show you a mouse pattern that works quite well. To these guys it’s all about the adventure, exploring and landing big fish. What fisherman can’t relate to that?

Now if I can only get someone to send me an email offering free use of their time machine. I could go fishing in patagonia for half a year AND see the next installment of the Trout Bum Diaries. Is volume II coming soon guys?
