Steelhead on the Little Salmon

Dan Bachman with Little Salmon Steelhead The steelhead action is picking up around the state as the weather warms up a bit from the January chill. Idaho Fish and Game’s weekly steelhead fishing report shows an increase in both the anglers and fish caught over the past two weeks. My ‘secret source’ in Riggins tells me that steelheading on the Little Salmon has been improving the last couple weeks as well.

I wish I could make it to Riggins or to the Clearwater South Fork this weekend, but it’s just not in the cards. Maybe next weekend. In the mean time I thought I would post a few pics from last November’s trip to the Little Salmon that I never got around to showing.

I spent a couple days fishing the Little Salmon the week before Thanksgiving and had two very different days. At the tail of a nice pool I hooked into 5 steelhead, landing 4 of them in just a couple hours on the first day. I went back to the same spot the next day and fished for 8 hours without a single bite.

And so it goes with steelheading.

Dan, I noticed the link to Montana Boat Builder’s website and your desire to build one from a kit. My good friend and fishing partner finished building ours last summer and you’re right they are beautimous. I can send you a link that shows our pictures of the process from start to finish. BTW if you do decide to build one be prepared to talk to total strangers about it everytime you pull it to the river. The whole experience was challenging, at times very fusturating and in the end very rewarding.

Your site is outstanding keep it up.
